From Beau to Mentor: Devin Cox's Journey

In 2018, Devin Cox participated in the Beautillion program, a rite of passage that marks the transition from youth to adulthood for young African American men. Today, he serves as a mentor, guiding a new generation through the same experiences that once transformed his life. Devin’s journey through the program not only prepared him for college but also set the foundation for his professional life.

The Power of Experiential Learning

Devin reflects on the impact of the program, noting, “The various workshops and skills that the brothers immersed us in were transformative.” Among these, the importance of networking emerged as a key lesson. Devin learned to build relationships with professors and peers alike, a skill that proved invaluable both inside and outside the classroom.

Mastery of Social Etiquette

One of Devin’s favorite aspects of the Beautillion was the etiquette course. He shares a memorable instance, “I’ve had strangers pay for my meals without me knowing just because I have great table manners and conduct myself well in public.” This course taught him the significance of personal conduct and the unforeseen opportunities that can arise from simply being mindful of one’s manners.

Financial Literacy and Independence

Another critical skill Devin gained was financial literacy. Budgeting became a part of his daily routine, especially when managing his modest funds for monthly groceries. “Trying to budget $100-120 for groceries for the month was hard at times because I love eating too,” he admits. Yet, these early experiences with financial management have helped him navigate his finances post-graduation effectively.

Continuing the Legacy

Since graduating, Devin has leveraged these skills to advance his career. He is currently working for RGIS, an inventory counting company, and continues to seek opportunities in his field of study—biology. His story is not just one of personal achievement but also of the ongoing cycle of mentorship within the Beautillion program.

Devin’s experience highlights the profound impact that mentoring and skills training can have on a young man’s life. As he continues to apply the lessons learned from the Beautillion, Devin also passes on his knowledge and insights to the next generation of Beaus, fostering a legacy of empowerment and success within the community.
